“Trying harder is usually not the answer” when you’re making changes to your nutrition, says CF-L3 Sarah Hopping Estrella.
Instead, try these strategies to set yourself up for nutrition success.
- Adopt a positive mindset.
- Recognize the habits that aren’t moving you toward your goal.
- Set up your environment to support your goal.
- Identify challenges or barriers to success and plan ahead for those scenarios.
- Replace undesired behaviors with healthier options that support your nutrition goals.
“When you have goals that are important to you, it’s much more rewarding if you’re sticking to things that are actually consistent with those goals than letting yourself fall victim to momentary pleasures,” Hopping Estrella says.

CrossFit Health Tip - Making Lifestyle Changes with Stephane Rochet, CF-L3 PH244
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Making a lifestyle change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Stephane Rochet, CF-L3, offers tips for getting started and overcoming plateaus.
“There’s nothing harder than taking that first step,” Rochet says.
His advice: Start small. Master the basics before moving on to more advanced steps.
Once you get started, he emphasizes the importance of being patient and focusing on the process rather than the results.
“If you focus on the outcome, it eludes you. But if you focus on the habit or the process, you end up getting the outcome you want,” he explains.

It’s well recognized that lifestyle factors are key in preventing cancer — quitting smoking, limiting alcohol, avoiding obesity — but did you know incorporating regular exercise has an impact as well?
Exercise reduces the risk of developing cancer by approximately 20% and decreases cancer mortality by about 20% as well.
Exercise oncologist Allison Betof, M.D. and Ph.D., shares some of the many ways exercise can function as a component of cancer treatment, including improving:
- Aerobic fitness
- Mental health
- Bone health
- Metabolic health
- And overall functionality
She notes open communication with an oncologist is important so patients and trainers have guidelines for modifications and safety precautions. And she stresses that exercise can have a multitude of benefits for patients undergoing treatment.

Skeletal Muscle + Health with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon PH241
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Your skeletal muscles make up nearly half your body weight, and while they are widely recognized as critical for locomotion, their lesser-known functions include increasing metabolism, protecting neurological health, and more.
Dr. Lyon recently joined me for a live Q&A-style webinar hosted by CrossFit Health with a focus on why it’s important to maintain adequate muscle mass to promote long-term health, and I’m sharing that content here.
Dr. Lyon is a functional medicine physician specializing in muscle-centric medicine, which focuses on the key role skeletal muscle plays in health and longevity. By using high-quality protein diets, supplements, and resistance training, she helps a variety of patients, from those suffering with sarcopenia or prediabetes to elite military operators, reduce chronic disease risk and improve longevity.
You can join me live for next month’s webinar featuring Dr. George Slavich on January 19th at 7 PM Eastern. Keep an eye out on CrossFit.com for registration details.

CrossFit Health Tip - Preventing Shoulder Injuries with Kelly Starrett, DPT PH240
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
Thursday Dec 23, 2021
Kelly Starrett, DPT breaks down the most common causes of shoulder injuries in CrossFit athletes and explains what can be done for prevention.
Starrett attributes most injuries to:
- Poor preparation or taking insufficient time to warm up
- Athletes lacking the necessary range of motion
- Generally not treating the shoulder with the same care as the rest of the body
To address shoulder discomfort before it becomes a problem, he recommends:
- Increasing soft tissue work by adding mobilization between sets during training sessions and doing myofascial release with a foam roller and ball at home
- Expanding your repertoire of warm-up exercises to restore normal range of motion in the shoulder joint
- Checking in with your breathing. Maintaining regular breath patterns often restores mobility.

Nicole Christensen, CrossFit Nutrition Course Director, has spent a significant amount of time on the road as part of CrossFit Seminar Staff.
To stay on track while on the go, she recommends visiting the grocery store as soon as you land and keeping a phone note of go-to portable meals so you don’t have to think about what you’re going to purchase.

- Packages of berries
- Cooked chicken breasts
- Deli meats
- Avocados
- Peanut butter packets
- Oatmeal packets
- Lara bars
- Carrots & hummus
When traveling multiple days a week, she notes dinner should mirror what you eat at home so you can maintain consistency in your diet. Keep yourself on track with basics like salads, meats, and vegetables.
